Simply put, internship is a period of work experience offered by an organisation for a limited period. Usually, in any internship program, employers search for possible future employees, possible ways to utilise the workforce for a cheaper rate, and to advertise their company (to some extent). Whereas, interns use this opportunity to search for relevant skills, evaluation of career path, and growth of their network.
Of course, students do get an upper hand in an internship program, mainly because many colleges have strong connections to corporations and they usually promote such activity to their students. Nevertheless, fresh or old graduates have leverage in getting an internship on their own because of their maturity, knowledge and with the help of platforms such as agency or simple the college recommendation. However, individuals who have not continued to further education wouldn’t usually be allowed to participate in programs that needs background knowledge. Most internship are only offered to individuals with background education on certain field hence it is usually targeted to students. But times are changing. With the increase in the number of internship companies, professional consultants, and charity auctions, it has become easier than ever for everyone, including graduates or non-students to have an opportunity to apply for the program.
The advantages in participating in an internship are endless. Therefore, internship attracts not only students but everyone in general. The intern is showered by chances to develop skills, cultivate personal characteristics (confidence, teamwork, reliability, etc.), create a sense of direction in life, grow his/her network, reflect on self, and many more. Moreover, the experience of meeting new people and working with them, makes you learn a variety of ideologies, culture and beliefs which helps the individual to grow emotionally, socially, mentally, and all in all makes the individual a better and competent person.
People are understanding the importance of internships and actively trying to get involved. Along with their own efforts and the help of consultants and internship companies, graduates and “non-students” are being involved in internship programs and their number will probably increase in the future. Thus, in conclusion, internship programs are not limited to students nor the age of the individual.
